- What’s Telstra Wi-Fi SMS?
Telstra Wi-Fi SMS is an extension of our existing Wi-Fi calling solution. The feature enables you to send and receive SMS messages on compatible devices when you’re connected to a supported Wi-Fi network. It’s ideal when you’ve got a Wi-Fi connection, but can’t connect to the mobile network to send or receive SMS messages.
- How and when do I get Telstra Wi-Fi SMS?
We’re currently rolling out Telstra Wi-Fi SMS technology to all Telstra mobile customers with compatible devices and a supported (consumer) fixed broadband service. The service is now supported on our mobile network. We’ll make Telstra Wi-Fi SMS available to select compatible devices that have been tested with the technology to ensure the best possible experience. As we progress, more devices will support Telstra Wi-Fi SMS.
If you are already using Wi-Fi calling on your device, you just need to make sure you are using a compatible device that has the latest software version. There’s no need to change any other settings on your device.

- How do I know if my device is supported?
Samsung devices
Depending on the device type, there are two ways in which you’ll know that this is now supported on your device:
- You will see a prompt on the screen to turn on a new feature as shown below. Please note, the device will need to be already updated to the latest software to receive the settings update.
This is the case for:
- Galaxy S20, S10 and S9 families
- Galaxy Note 8 family and above
- Galaxy A20, A70, A90 5G, A30 and A51
- You will need to perform a software update for the following devices once the firmware has been tested and released:
- Galaxy S8 family
- Galaxy A5 2017
- Galaxy J2 Pro
Apple devices
A mandatory settings update will appear on your device to inform you that Carrier Settings have been updated. Click 'OK' to accept.
The device needs to have the latest iOS version iOS13.4.1
- Am I able to use Telstra Wi-Fi SMS?
To be able to use Telstra Wi-Fi SMS, you need to:
- Have a Telstra approved Wi-Fi SMS compatible device.
- Have VoLTE enabled on your device.
- Have updated to the latest device OS software.
- Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on your device.
- Will I be able to send and receive both SMS and MMS over Wi-Fi?
Currently, only SMS will be supported over Wi-Fi. We are looking at enabling MMS over Wi-Fi in the future.
- Why might Telstra Wi-Fi SMS be important to me?
Telstra Wi-Fi SMS means we can deliver SMS messages to smartphones when they’re connected to Wi-Fi, but not able to connect to our mobile network. This may make it possible for you to send and receive SMS messages in places where it was previously not possible.
- Does Telstra Wi-Fi SMS cost extra?
Data used via your Telstra Home Broadband Wi-Fi connection is unmetered (not charged). However, data used via non-Telstra Broadband will be charged (or taken off data allowance) based on your current provider’s plan.
There are no additional monthly fees associated with your Telstra mobile service for Telstra Wi-Fi SMS. Charges to do with the Fixed Broadband service may vary, depending on your service provider:
- If you have a Telstra Fixed Broadband service, the data associated with the SMS message is unmetered – meaning it’s not charged.
- If you have a non- Telstra Broadband service, the data associated with the SMS message will be charged (or taken off data allowance) based on your current provider’s plan.
- Can I turn off Telstra Wi-Fi SMS?
Yes, you can turn off Telstra Wi-Fi SMS as follows:
- For Android devices: Navigate to your phone’s calling app > select More > tap Settings > and un-tick the Wi-Fi Calling option.
- For iPhone: Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi calling > switch radio button to Off.
- Can I get Telstra Wi-Fi SMS on Telstra Pre-Paid?
Yes, it is supported on Telstra Pre-Paid and Boost. However, it is not currently available on Belong.
- Will Telstra Wi-Fi SMS work on BYO devices purchased from other providers that have been switched to Telstra?
Yes, the devices supported will be as per the detailed list in the table below, provided they are running the latest supported device OS version.
- If my device supports Wi-Fi Calling will it also support Wi-Fi SMS?
It depends on the type of device you have. Device manufacturers are choosing to enable Wi-Fi SMS for more recent models (e.g. Apple iPhone 6 and later). If you have an older device, you may find that it supports Wi-Fi calling but not Wi-Fi SMS. See FAQ 3 for devices supporting both features.
