Amazon Web Services: Network connections

Your AWS subscription with Telstra includes access to several online management portals:

Alternatively, you can use AWS CLIs or APIs for automation and greater control.

Refer to the ‘how to use’ knowledge article for more information about these online management portals.  For specific guidance on using Cloud Gateway, see the Cloud Gateway knowledge articles.

The following details are applicable to Australian customers only.

Connecting to AWS

As part of the AWS order form you’ll be asked to select whether you want to connect to your AWS cloud services using an existing Telstra IP network service, a point-to-point optical or ethernet network connection, or via an alternative network arrangement.

Complete your order form and submit. If you’ve chosen:

  • Telstra IP network service, connect using Cloud Gateway. Your service won’t be activated until you have connected your AWS connection to Cloud Gateway (see below for details on how to connect).
  • Optical or ethernet, or an alternative network arrangement, we’ll contact you within a few business days to discuss your connection. An alternative network arrangement will require offline approval.

Setting up a Cloud Gateway connection via a Telstra IP network service takes up to five business days. We’ll send you an email once it’s ready to be configured.

An internet connection is included and available immediately with AWS.

Types of connections available to AWS

  • Telstra IP network service via Cloud Gateway*
A Telstra IP network service connection between your virtual private network (VPN) and an AWS connection location, via Cloud Gateway.
  • Optical or ethernet
Dedicated bandwidth, high speed connection linking your site to an AWS connection location.
  • Alternative network connection
A network connection that’s not one of the above options. You could choose not to connect your AWS to a network.

*Cloud Gateway is only offered when you connect via a Telstra IP network service. To order a Telstra IP network service, you must have an existing VPN.

Cloud Gateway connection to AWS

A Cloud Gateway connection to AWS is available to customers based in Australia, connecting to a preselected Australian data centre. To use Cloud Gateway you must have an existing Telstra IP network service.

Telstra’s Cloud Gateway connection to AWS is available in two ways:

  • As a service offered with AWS from Telstra
  • As a standalone service used to connect to AWS cloud services purchased outside of Telstra

These Cloud Gateway services are not identical. When you use Cloud Gateway to connect to AWS from Telstra, the connection is set up on your behalf and you can view this connection by logging in to the Cloud Gateway management console.

When you use Cloud Gateway as a standalone service to connect to AWS cloud services (purchased through Telstra or other providers), you’ll need to locate your existing AWS subscription. Log in to the Cloud Gateway management console and follow the prompts.

How to order a Cloud Gateway connection to AWS

STEP

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Start with a Telstra IP network service

If you don't currently have a Telstra IP network service, contact your Telstra representative or call 1300 835 787 to find out more.

Don’t know who your Telstra representative is? Call 1300 835 787. We’re available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (AEST).

2. Order Telstra’s AWS service

You can access the AWS order form either by selecting the ‘purchase’ button on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) tile in Telstra’s Cloud Services Store , or by looking for the ‘purchase’ button on the AWS page on our website.

3. Select your choice of connectivity and submit your order

As part of the AWS order form, you’ll be asked to choose how you want to connect – if want to use an existing optical, Ethernet or IP network service to connect to your AWS cloud services.

Select the Telstra IP network option. Please note this doesn’t mean we create a Cloud Gateway connection on your behalf (see step 4).

4. Register for Cloud Gateway

If you haven’t already registered for Cloud Gateway, select the ‘purchase’ button on the Cloud Gateway tile in Telstra’s Cloud Services Store.

5. Purchase a Cloud Gateway connection to your AWS service

Log in to the Cloud Gateway management console and purchase a connection to your AWS

Additional details for adding a Cloud Gateway connection can be found here

6. Complete the configuration

You'll receive an email within five business days, when your Cloud Gateway connection to AWS service is ready for you to complete the configuration. Follow the steps in the email.

Log in to the AWS Management Console via Telstra’s Cloud Services Portal to complete the network configuration that will establish connectivity.

7. Configure security

Using the AWS Management Console you can configure your security policies for your AWS environment. See the AWS website for details.

Disconnecting Cloud Gateway

Log in to the Cloud Gateway management console to disconnect your AWS service.

If you cancel before the end of a contract period, early termination fees may apply for your Cloud Gateway service and any Reserved Instance AWS Service. For more information, refer to Our Customer Terms.
