Is the Virtual Server (Dedicated) Gen2 service connected to the internet?

Your Virtual Server (Dedicated) Gen2 service is provisioned with a Telstra internet connection by default. This includes internet and SMTP mail relay traffic.

How do I create a private network connection?

For services in Melbourne and Sydney, you’ll be provided with an SSL VPN connection and have the option of using our Cloud Gateway service to connect to the Telstra IP network.

Perth data centre users must select either a Telstra IP network connection or SSL VPN.

What is NSX and can I use it?

VMware NSX® is the network virtualisation used on the Virtual Server (Dedicated) Gen2 service. To ensure compliance with our security best practice, access is not given to infrastructure that is managed by us to support your service – this includes NSX.

Is a firewall provided and can I access it?

Firewalls are provided for both your public and private networks to increase the security and privacy of your virtual servers.

Both private networks and public networks are created with default firewall rules – all network traffic is allowed by default on the private network, and all traffic is blocked by default on the public network. These rules can by updated via the Cloud Services management console.

You’ll begin to be charged when your service is provisioned.

How will I be billed?

All charges, additional usage and any applicable add-on fees will be charged to your Telstra account.

How does billing work if I have multiple accounts?

If you have multiple Telstra billing IDs, you can select the ID you want your services charged to when you make your first purchase.

How do I manage my Virtual Server (Dedicated) Gen2 service?

You can manage your service via VMware vCenter and the Cloud Services management console.

The VMware vCenter is a a centralised application that lets you manage virtual machines on each of your blades. Resources such as CPU, RAM and storage can be scaled up and down to meet your needs. The Cloud Services management console allows you to:

• View and submit modification requests against your dedicated resources – blades, clusters and storage

• Create clusters

• Find the IP address on your vCenter server

• Request public IP address and management IP address

• Request a backup of your virtual server data

• Configure, manage and remove your backup set-up

• Submit and manage various network requests

• View your activity log

How do I gain access to VMware vCenter?

Using VMware® vCenter Server, two roles are provided for your virtual servers with similar privileges granted; however there are a few additional privileges in the VM level role:

1. Customer Access Role with vCenter level privileges in vSphere, and

2. Customer Access Role VM level privileges in vSphere. You’ll receive credentials for five vCenter users and one VM level when your service is activated.

How do I give users access to the Cloud Services management console?

If you already have access to the management console, you can immediately add as many Telstra cloud email login users as you like through the Cloud Services management console’s ‘account’ section.

If you don’t have the Cloud Administrator role assigned to you, you’ll need to have it assigned to you by your company's authorised representative. If you are the Authorised Representative, by default you will already have the Cloud Administrator role assigned to you.

If you have a business or enterprise login

If you have a business login (without a business ID), you can only add users through the Cloud Services management console.

If you have a business login (with a business ID), Your Company Authorised User and Company Administrative User can grant Cloud Administrator access through Telstra Business’ My Account portal.

If you have an enterprise login and you are your company’s Authorised Representative or Administrative User, you can grant access through Enterprise & Government’s Your Telstra Tools portal.

How do I assign user access to the Cloud Services management console via Telstra Business’ My Account portal?

Your company's administrator user is responsible for managing access to the Cloud Services management console.

Step 1 – Log into My Account

Select the home' tab. Select 'give someone account access' from the ‘account settings’ section.

Step 2 – New user?

Set up an account Select 'Create New User'. You'll receive an email with the new user's login details.

Step 3 – Select the user

Select 'Update Product Access' from the user's details page.

Step 4 - Assign cloud user permissions

Select either:

• Cloud Authorised Purchaser – authorisation to purchase Cloud Services

• Cloud Administrator – authorisation to access the Cloud Services management console and manage your cloud solution on behalf of your company.

Select the ‘update’ button.

People who have been assigned the Cloud Administrator permission can also grant users direct access to the Cloud Services management console via Account > Manage cloud users.

How do I assign user access to the Cloud Services management console via Telstra Enterprise & Government’s Your Telstra Tools portal?

Your company's Telstra authorised representative is responsible for managing user access to the Cloud Services management console.

Step 1 - Log into Your Telstra Tools

Select the 'Your Profile' tab or 'Manage your users'.

Step 2 – New user? Set up an account

Select 'Create New User'.

Step 3 – Select the user

Select 'Change' from the user's details page.

Step 4 - Assign cloud user permissions

From 'Managing services', select either:

• Cloud Authorised Purchaser – authorisation to purchase Cloud Services

• Cloud Administrator – authorisation to access the Cloud Services management console and manage your cloud solution on behalf of your business.

People who have been assigned the Cloud Administrator permission can also grant users direct access to the Cloud Services management console via Account > Profile > Manage cloud users.

What can and can’t I do with my new Telstra cloud email login?

The Telstra cloud email login registered during purchase can only be used for logging into the Cloud Services management console.

You can’t view your online bill with this username and password, or access and manage any of your other Telstra services.

To access your other Telstra services and view your bills, customers based in Australia need a Telstra Business or Telstra Enterprise & Government username, password and/or a business ID. Contact your Telstra representative if you require login access to the Telstra Business or Telstra Enterprise & Government portals.

What are affinity and anti-affinity rules and how do I apply them?

Once your service is activated, you can opt to control the placement of virtual machines on blades (hosts) within a cluster by using affinity or anti-affinity rules, which you can apply at no extra cost. Learn more about affinity rules at VMware.

There are two types of affinity rules.

• VM-Blade (aka VM-Host) affinity rules are used to specify affinity or anti-affinity between one or more virtual machines and blades (hosts).

• VM-VM affinity rules are used to specify affinity or anti-affinity between two or more virtual machines. Minimum number of blades required to create a rule.

How to add a rule

1. Navigate to the Dedicated resources page in the Cloud Services management console.

2. Scroll down to the Affinity rules section and select which rule you’d like to Add a rule to: VM-VM or VM-Blade.

3. Choose a cluster from the dropdown menu to apply the rule to.

4. If you’ve chosen VM-VM, choose Affinity if you want to keep your VMs together and Anti-affinity if you want them separate. If you choose VM-Blade, only affinity rules apply. See the table above for VM and blade requirements. Once a rule is created, its name and type (VM-VM/VM-blade and affinity/anti-affinity) cannot be modified.

5. Choose a rule name of up to 20 characters. This name will appear in vCenter Server as [Cust ID]-[rule-name].

6. Depending on the rule you’ve chosen, from your list select at least two virtual machines to apply a VM-VM rule to or at least one virtual machine to apply the VM-Blade rule to.

7. Select to Enable or Disable the rule. Note that disabling a rule saves your inputs; it just doesn’t enforce the rule yet.

Add, edit or remove a rule

1. Navigate to the Dedicated resources page in the Cloud Services management console.

2. Scroll down to the Affinity rules section, select the type of rule (VM-VM or VM-Blade) you want to apply your changes to. The list of rules under that category will appear.

3. Select which rule you’d like to Edit or Remove. The full rule details will appear for you to review and make changes, if required. Note: rules are enabled and enforced in VMware vCenter Server subject to its distributed resource scheduler, which is configured by Telstra operators to ensure the health of your service. Factors that may prevent rules from being enabled and enforced include hardware failure, and operational, support and/or maintenance activities. If you notice your rules aren’t functioning as intended after 24 hours, you can contact us.

How do I add a blade?

You can request blades from Cloud Services management console. Choose Add Blade/Storage and select Blade from the dropdown list in the the Dedicated resources section. See the Virtual Server (Dedicated) Gen2 user guide for details.

How do I remove a blade?

Removing a blade is upon request. You must contact us to remove blades, ensuring any virtual servers using resources on the blade won’t be affected by its removal. Early termination costs may apply.

How do I add and downsize storage?

Manage storage through the Cloud Services management console. The Dedicated resources section allows you to perform these functions. See the Virtual Server (Dedicated) Gen2 user guide for details.

How do I request a backup?

Contact your Telstra representative to request the Managed Backup service.

Can Telstra install and manage my operating systems and software?

No. You need to provide and license the operating system and application(s) required for this service.

How do I access my bill?

Your Telstra cloud email login username can’t be used to view your bill. The only way to access your bill online is to create an additional user account associated with the billing account linked to your cloud accounts. Go to the Telstra Business’ registration page to create the additional user account. If you are a Telstra customer based in Australia, after registering you’ll be able to use the new user account to log into the Cloud Services management console and view your online bill.

Blades

How are blade tier prices determined?

All blades have a published monthly fee for the nominated contract term (1, 12, 24, 36 months). See the Cloud Infrastructure Gen2 pricing guide for the latest fees. Rebates are available for customers who have more than four identical blades (CPU, RAM and Storage configuration) within a single compute subscription (location). Rebates are offered in two tiers: 5-8 blades and 9+ blades. Rebates apply only to that tier and vary with configurations.

When you purchase additional blades, taking you into a higher tier, you will receive the monthly rebate for each blade in that tier for that particular configuration.

Will the tiered rebate be applied to all of my blades?

No. The rebate is only applied to the blades within the applicable tier, not every blade in that location.

How do blade tiering rebates appear on my bill?

The blade price will not be adjusted to the tiered price on your bill. You will receive a charge on your bill for each blade at the published blade price, along with a corresponding credit that matches your quantity and configuration.

For example:

If you have 9 (2 CPU, 256 GB RAM) blades for 3 years in one location, all blades aside from the four initial units are eligible for rebates. You will see:

9 blades @ $1650

4 credits @ $125 (only the 4 blades in the 5-8 tier are eligible for rebates)

1 credits @ $250 (only the 1 blade in the 9+ tier is eligible for a rebate)

Storage

How are storage tier prices determined?

Storage tiered pricing is calculated based on the monthly amount of allocated storage you have of the same type (active, performance, ultra) within a single compute subscription (location).

Once you have allocated past a tier threshold, any additional allocated storage will be charged at the price of the next tier.

Will the tiered price be applied to all of my storage?

No. The tiered price is only applied to the amount of allocated storage you have within the applicable tier, not all allocated storage.

How does storage tiered pricing appear on my bill?

The storage amount in each tier would appear as separate items on the bill.

For example:

If you have 50,000 GB of active storage for your compute subscription, you will see:

10,000 @ $0.15 (Tier 0 price)

40,000 @ $0.12 (Tier 1 price)

Easily change these configurations to quickly respond to business demands. You can scale up to eight CPUs and 64GB RAM.

While a virtual server is in ‘Powered off’ or ‘Suspended’ mode, you won’t accrue usage of CPU or RAM attributed to that virtual server.

VIRTUAL DISKS – SYSTEM AND DATA

Adjust your cloud solution by adding or removing data disks from your virtual servers at any time – from a minimum of 10GB to a maximum of 1,000GB in size.

Through the management console, you can create up to 15 virtual disks per virtual server.

You can also remove or increase the size of a data disk, but can't reduce it.

The system disk, which contains the operating system, can't be removed nor resized.

The system disk size depends on the operating system you choose:

IP ADDRESSES

Telstra will allocate a public IP address to each virtual server facing the internet in your network configuration.

You'll assign your own private IP addresses for the virtual servers connected to your private network. Both public and private IP addresses are static.

Configure up to two virtual network interface cards (vNICs) per virtual server.

LICENCE MOBILITY

Use your existing Microsoft software licences on our cloud servers.

Thanks to our status as a Microsoft-authorised licence mobility partner, if you're a Microsoft Volume Licensing customer covered by Microsoft Software Assurance you may be able to use your eligible software licences on our cloud servers.

Licence mobility enables you to leverage your existing Microsoft licence investment on our cloud servers, thereby making it easier to move to our cloud services.

The eligible application software licences are:

Microsoft SharePoint^® Server
Microsoft SQL Server^®

Note: Microsoft Windows Server and desktop apps are ineligible. We don't support customer-supplied operating systems or virtual hard disks – you must select one of our pre-packaged operating systems.

HOW TO APPLY

STEP 1 – DETERMINE WHICH OF YOUR LICENCES ARE ELIGIBLE

Simply view your licence status by logging in to the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Centre and note which of the above eligible applications you're licensed for. Typically, your IT or procurement department can access your licensing agreement details.

STEP 2 – VERIFY YOUR LICENCES WITH MICROSOFT

Under the Authorised Mobility Partner section of the form, you'll need to write 'Telstra Corporation Limited' as your mobility partner and include our URL www.telstra.com and licensing email softwarelicensing@team.telstra.com. From there, wait for signed notification* from Microsoft before installing your software. This usually takes a few business days.

STEP 3 – INSTALL YOUR APPLICATION SOFTWARE

*If your licence(s) are eligible, Microsoft will email a counter-signed copy of the form both to you and us. If your licences can't be verified, Microsoft will return the verification form to you explaining why. You can make any necessary revisions and resubmit the form as many times as needed.

BACKUPS

If you configure back-up on your virtual servers, we'll create daily backups of your system and data, and storing them off-site.

Our backup retention options are:

You can restore selected individual or all files from a data disk from virtual server backups. We don't support full system restore from backups, only from snapshots.

SNAPSHOTS

Virtual server snapshots help you roll back to a system configuration up to 24 hours from the moment you created it.

You can only have one snapshot at a time for each virtual server. If you create a new one, you automatically delete the earlier snapshot.

ABOUT NETWORK AND SECURITY ADD-ONS

CONNECTING TO YOUR VIRTUAL SERVERS

Virtual servers can be connected to the internet and/or a private cloud network. You can connect one or more IP subnets to your private cloud network.

There are two options for connecting to virtual servers through a permanent, private network - the Telstra Next IP^® network or an IPsec VPN network tunnel. Both can be requested through the management console.

A Telstra Next IP^® network connection can reach all your IP subnets in your private cloud network.

IPsec VPN network tunnels connect only to the IP subnets you specify.

REMOTE ACCESS TO VIRTUAL SERVERS

You can remotely access and manage virtual servers through SSL VPN technology – a secure client-to-site network tunnel used to remotely access your cloud solution from the internet. You access it over HTTPS, using a web browser. Once authenticated, you have direct access to virtual servers. All the network traffic will be transmitted securely.

Once you've established a VPN connection, you'll be able to use tools such as Remote Desktop Services or Secure Shell to manage your virtual server – just as if you were sitting in front of it.

IPSEC VPN

To be reachable by IPsec VPN, a virtual server needs to be connected to a private cloud network.

Connect up to three IPsec VPN network tunnels at one time. Add and remove tunnels any time.

Specify one or more source subnets at a single office site and multiple destination subnets in your private cloud network – all within a single network tunnel. Use firewall rules to restrict access to selected virtual servers.

You choose the encryption and authentication protocols that secure your IPsec VPN connection, from the options below.

VLAN EXTENSION

Migrate virtual servers or create a hybrid cloud by extending VLANs between your on-premises infrastructure and our virtual data centre, sharing an IP subnet across both environments.

Connection is through a point-to-point VLAN Extension tunnel, over a Telstra Next IP^® network.

VLAN Extension can extend subnets between Telstra cloud infrastructure and any site connected to your Telstra Next IP^®network, including third-party data centres or co-location facilities.

To use our VLAN Extension service you'll need:

A Telstra cloud infrastructure virtual data centre in Australia
A Telstra Next IP^® network connection
Any Telstra cloud infrastructure compute service
- Virtual Server (Shared)
- Virtual Server (Dedicated)
- Managed virtual server (dedicated)
A terminating device compatible with our VLAN Extension service
- Cisco CSR 1000V AppX Bundle
- Cisco Nexus 3172 (available from late October 2014)

VLAN Extension cannot be used to connect two Telstra virtual data centres.

To accommodate VXLAN protocol encapsulation overhead, ensure your terminating device and any other inpath devices in your on-premises infrastructure have an MTU size of at least 1600 bytes.

First hop redundancy protocols such as HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol), VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) and GLBP (Gateway Load Balancing Protocol) are not supported by our VLAN Extension add-on.

VLAN Extension can be configured in either a redundant or a non-redundant format. Redundancy of the communication connection is achieved by supporting the VLAN Extension tunnel with an identical second compatible terminating device at your on-premises end of the tunnel.

VLAN Extension enables you to progressively relocate servers across a shared subnet. It also allows you to migrate a server in a compatible format (e.g. OVF) to or from a virtual server (dedicated) service in cloud infrastructure. Note that VMware vMotion cannot be used for this purpose.

As part of your device set up, you'll need to create firewall rules to allow communication between VTEP IP endpoints on UDP port 4789.

For each extended subnet, you can control your traffic flow by locating your gateway either on our cloud platform, or in your on-premises infrastructure.

Whenever the gateway is located in our cloud infrastructure, for configuration purposes we require the first three useable IP addresses of each extended subnet.

Changing gateway location may disrupt access to your servers, and require configuration by both you and Telstra. Your service will be disrupted during a gateway change if your IP subnet is routed to both your on-premises infrastructure and cloud infrastructure environment.

A gateway change is available in two service levels, including a scheduled gateway change. A service level comparison is shown below.

SMTP MAIL RELAY

All outbound email traffic originating from mail servers operating within the cloud must be sent through our SMTP mail relay service. SMTP mail relay is charged based on the number of email messages sent.

Configure your application using our SMTP mail relay details (which we send to you when your cloud solution is up and running). You're automatically charged for any emails sent through our servers.

EXTRA SERVICES

LOAD BALANCER SERVICES

Want to optimise your virtual server and network performance? Request load balancers for your private and public networks and control traffic between multiple virtual servers.

For more complex network configurations, you have the flexibility to customise the load balancer algorithm to divert particular traffic to different directions. The load balancer health check redirects traffic to other load-balanced servers if one of your virtual servers is not responding.

If your load balancer is facing the internet, we allocate a public IP address. If it's located in your private network, you assign your own private IP address.

RELIABILITY AND ASSURANCE

Our cloud infrastructure is fully redundant. We protect you from a single point of failure for all the features in our architecture.

We also perform regular penetration testing of our platform using a third party.

Our cloud infrastructure is also monitored by an assurance tool that sends alerts to our support team if something goes wrong.

What testing does RiverMeadow do to ensure that the migrated instance works on the destination environment?

RiverMeadow tests to ensure the systems boots in the cloud and that the filesystem was moved over correctly. RiverMeadow does not perform application testing – in fact, the service doesn’t touch applications at all. It moves the server at a filesystem level and the applications move as is.
